A free expat budget calculator — earn in one currency, spend in another, one clear budget

Expat Budget Calculator

Living abroad often means your salary lands in one currency, your rent is due in another, and your savings go somewhere else again. An expat budget calculator brings all of that into one clear picture: enter each income and expense in the currency it actually occurs in, choose one main Budget Currency, and see your whole financial life converted across daily, weekly, monthly and annual views.

01— The basics

Why expats need a multi-currency budget

When you move abroad, your money stops speaking one language. You might be paid in Swiss francs, pay rent in euros, send savings home in US dollars, and keep a travel buffer in pounds. Adding those raw amounts together mixes currencies that are not equal. An expat budget calculator converts each line into one main Budget Currency so your totals actually mean something — and shows them across every time frame you need.

Income in one currency

A salary paid in your host country’s currency — converted into your Budget Currency.

Expenses in another

Rent, groceries and bills in the local currency, each tagged and converted.

Savings elsewhere

Transfers home or investments in a third currency, all rolled into one total.

One Budget Currency

Pick the currency you think in. Every total is shown in it, consistently.

02— How it works

How expat budgeting works in Clear Budget

First, choose your main Budget Currency — the one you want all totals shown in. Then, for any income or expense paid in a different currency, tick “Use different currency” on that row and pick the currency it actually occurs in. Clear Budget converts each amount into your Budget Currency in the correct order — original amount, then currency conversion, then frequency conversion — so your daily, weekly, monthly and annual totals stay accurate.

1. Choose a Budget Currency

Pick the currency all your totals will be shown in — for example, USD.

2. Tag per-entry currencies

Mark each row paid in another currency — salary in CHF, rent in EUR, savings in GBP.

3. See all time frames

Daily, weekly, monthly and annual totals, all converted into your Budget Currency.

Exchange rates update automatically

Clear Budget fetches live exchange rates and caches them for six hours, so your converted totals stay current without any effort. When multi-currency entries are in use, a small note shows when the rates were last updated.

03— A simple example

An expat budget example

Say your Budget Currency is USD. You earn a monthly salary of CHF 6,000 in Switzerland, pay monthly rent of €1,500, and send £300 home to savings each month. With per-entry currencies set, Clear Budget converts all three into USD and totals everything. (Illustrative — actual conversions use live rates.)

Salary (CHF → USD)

CHF 6,000 / mo

≈ $6,900 in budget currency

Rent (EUR → USD)

€1,500 / mo

≈ $1,740 in budget currency

Savings (GBP → USD)

£300 / mo

≈ $384 in budget currency

Monthly income ≈ $6,900, expenses ≈ $1,740, savings $384 — leaving about $4,776 remaining, all in your chosen USD Budget Currency. The same approach works for any combination of currencies and frequencies.

05— FAQ

Expat budget calculator FAQ

What is an expat budget calculator?
It is a budgeting tool built for people who earn and spend across different currencies. You pick one main Budget Currency for your totals, then enter each income and expense in the currency it actually occurs in. The calculator converts everything into your Budget Currency so the whole budget reads as one consistent picture.
How does Clear Budget handle different income and expense currencies?
Tick “Use different currency” on any income or expense row and choose the currency it is paid in. Clear Budget converts each amount into your main Budget Currency using live exchange rates, then applies the frequency conversion — so daily, weekly, monthly and annual totals stay accurate.
Which currencies can I use?
Clear Budget supports multiple currencies, plus Bitcoin (BTC). Rates are fetched live and cached for six hours, with a last-updated note shown when multi-currency entries are in use. See the Multi-Currency Budget Calculator for the full list and mechanics.
I have irregular income too — can Clear Budget handle that?
Yes. Enter each income source on its own line with its real frequency, and Clear Budget normalizes everything into your Budget Currency across daily, weekly, monthly and annual views. For variable income specifically, see the Irregular Income Budget Calculator.
