How long to reach a savings goal? A free calculator that answers it in months

How Long to Reach a Savings Goal?

“How many months will it take to save $X?” is a question about time, not just money. This calculator takes your starting balance, your target, how much you add and how often, and an optional annual yield — then gives you an estimated completion date. It also shows how moving the target or the contribution shifts that date, so you can see the trade-off between saving more and waiting longer.

01— The timeline question

What decides how long the journey takes

The time to reach a savings target is set by three levers and one optional nudge. The gap between your starting balance and your target is the distance. Your recurring contribution and its frequency set the pace. An optional annual yield nudges the finish line closer as the balance earns growth. Move any lever and the timeline responds — which is exactly what this calculator makes visible.

Starting balance

What you have saved toward the target today — the lower the start, the longer the road.

Target amount

The total you want to reach — raising it lengthens the timeline, lowering it shortens it.

Contribution & frequency

How much you add and how often — the pace that closes the gap, converted to a monthly basis.

Optional annual yield

An assumed return on the balance. Optional, and shown as an estimate only.

02— How the timeline is estimated

Gap divided by pace, read as months

Clear Budget converts your recurring contribution to a monthly equivalent using its real frequency, subtracts your starting balance from your target to find the gap, and divides the gap by that monthly contribution. The result is the number of months to the finish line — shown as an estimated completion date counted forward from today. Add an optional annual yield and it layers in compound growth on the growing balance, shortening the estimate.

Target− Start÷ Contribution= Months

Add an optional annual yield and Clear Budget compounds the balance, bringing the completion date closer. The date is a projection, not a promise — real returns and life both change.

03— A timeline example

A relocation fund, read as months

Say you are building a $25,000 relocation fund for an international move. You have $2,000 saved and can add $500 every two weeks. With no growth assumed, here is the timeline — and how it bends when you move the target or the contribution.

Target

$25,000

Starting balance

$2,000

Every 2 weeks

$500

Estimated time

~21 months

Gap: $25,000 − $2,000 = $23,000. A $500 biweekly contribution is about $1,083 a month, so the fund finishes in roughly 21 months — sooner if the balance earns a little interest.

Move the target: raise it to $30,000 and the gap grows to $28,000, pushing the timeline out to about 26 months. Drop it to $20,000 and the same contribution finishes in roughly 17 months.

Move the contribution: raise it to $700 biweekly (about $1,517 a month) and the original $25,000 goal finishes in roughly 15 months — six months sooner for $200 more each cycle.

04— The tool

See your completion date in Clear Budget

Add your goal as a line under Goals, Savings & Investing, then open “Add target or growth” to set a Current Amount, Target Amount and optional Annual Yield. Clear Budget shows a live estimated completion date that moves as your starting balance or contribution changes, and projects the balance across multiple horizons when a yield is entered. For the same numbers read as progress rather than time, see the Savings Goal Calculator; for placing a goal inside a full budget, see the Financial Goal Calculator.

Estimated completion date

A live date counted forward from today, updating as your balance or contribution changes.

05— FAQ

How long to reach a savings goal — FAQ

How does Clear Budget estimate the time to reach a savings target?
It subtracts your starting balance from your target to find the gap, then divides that gap by your recurring contribution converted to a monthly equivalent. The result is the number of months to the finish line, shown as an estimated completion date. Add an optional annual yield and it layers in compound growth on the growing balance, shortening the estimate.
How does changing the target change the timeline?
A higher target widens the gap and lengthens the timeline; a lower target narrows it. Because the gap is divided by your contribution, the timeline moves in proportion to the change in the gap — doubling the gap roughly doubles the months at the same contribution, before any growth.
How does changing the contribution change the timeline?
Raising your recurring contribution shortens the timeline; lowering it lengthens the timeline. The relationship is inverse — doubling the contribution roughly halves the months to the same target, before growth — so small increases in how much you save can move the completion date noticeably.
How do dates and recurring contributions affect the projection?
Your contribution frequency is converted to a consistent monthly basis, and the number of periods determines the estimated completion date from today. A weekly contribution compounds into the timeline differently than a monthly one at the same annual rate, and an optional annual yield shifts the date closer as the balance grows.
