01— The numbers behind your progress

Four numbers describe where your goal stands

Progress toward a savings target is not a single figure — it is the relationship between where you are, where you are going, and how fast you are moving. These four inputs are all the calculator needs to show how much of the goal you have already reached and how much remains.

Current / start amount

What you have saved toward the goal so far — your starting point today.

Target savings amount

The total you are aiming to reach — the finish line for this goal.

Amount still needed

Your target minus your current amount — the gap the calculator derives for you.

Recurring contribution

How much you add and how often — weekly, biweekly, monthly or any frequency.

02— How progress is measured

From a target to a progress bar

Clear Budget reads your progress in two complementary ways. The progress percentage is your current amount divided by your target — how much of the finish line you have already crossed. The amount still needed is your target minus your current amount — the remaining gap in plain currency. Your recurring contribution is converted to a monthly equivalent using its real frequency, so the projected completion stays consistent whether you save weekly, biweekly or yearly.

Progress percentage

Current÷ Target

The share of your goal already saved, shown as a live progress bar.

Amount still needed

Target− Current

The remaining gap in plain currency — what is left to save.

03— A progress example

A wedding savings goal, read as progress

Imagine you and your partner are saving $12,000 toward wedding costs. You have $4,500 set aside already and add $300 a month. Here is how that goal reads as progress rather than as a countdown.

Target

$12,000

Current

$4,500

Still needed

$7,500

Progress

37.5%

Progress: $4,500 ÷ $12,000 = 37.5%. Amount still needed: $12,000 − $4,500 = $7,500. At $300 a month the goal is on track to finish in roughly 25 months — but the headline here is the bar: you are already over a third of the way there. Add a one-off $1,000 gift and progress jumps to 45.8% in a single update.

04— The tool

Watch your progress bar fill in Clear Budget

Add your goal as a line under Goals, Savings & Investing, then open “Add target or growth” to set a Current Amount, Target Amount and optional Annual Yield. Clear Budget shows a live progress bar, the amount still needed, and a projected completion date — and projects the balance across 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 and 30-year horizons when a yield is entered. For the same numbers framed around time, see How Long to Reach a Savings Goal; for placing a goal inside a full budget, see the Financial Goal Calculator.

Progress, not just time

A live percentage and amount still needed tell you where the goal stands today, not only when it ends.

Any frequency

Enter contributions weekly, biweekly, monthly or annually — all converted to a consistent basis for you.

05— FAQ

Savings goal calculator FAQ

What does “progress toward a savings goal” actually measure?
Progress is the share of your target you have already banked: your current amount divided by your target amount, shown as a percentage. Alongside it, Clear Budget shows the amount still needed — your target minus your current amount — so you can see both how far you have come and how much remains.
How are different contribution frequencies represented?
Enter your contribution the way it actually happens — weekly, biweekly, monthly, annual or any frequency Clear Budget supports. It converts each to a common monthly basis so the amount still needed and the projected completion stay consistent no matter how often you save.
Does this calculator tell me how long the goal will take?
It shows progress and the amount still needed first. A projected completion date appears as well, but the focus here is on where you stand today. If the timeline is your main question, the How Long to Reach a Savings Goal page frames the same numbers around time directly.
How is this different from the emergency fund calculator?
The Emergency Fund Calculator is specifically about a buffer measured in months of essential expenses. This page is for any savings target with a fixed amount — a wedding, a car, a course — where you want to track how much of the goal you have already reached.
